Description

Coco Curls

Coco curls are natural coconut husk botanicals for both aquatic and terrestrial setups. Add them to reptile enclosures, bioactive terrariums, vivariums, freshwater aquariums, and shrimp tanks. Their curled shape adds texture and structure while creating a more natural-looking habitat.

Because coconut husk breaks down slowly, coco curls last longer than many types of leaf litter. They also pair well with leaves, seed pods, bark, live plants, and other natural botanicals.

Each package contains 12 individual coco curls.

How to Prepare for Aquarium Use

You will need to waterlog these items before they will stay submerged.

  1. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse under clean water to remove loose fibers, dust, and debris. Do not use soap or cleaning products.
  2. Boil for 15–20 minutes. Place in a pot of water and boil them for about 15 to 20 minutes. This helps clean the botanicals and allows the dry coconut fibers to begin absorbing water.
  3. Soak until they sink. After boiling, allow to cool. Then, place them in a container of fresh water. Keep them fully submerged while they soak. An aquarium-safe weight can help hold stubborn pieces underwater.
  4. Be patient with floating pieces. Some coco curls may sink after an overnight soak. However, thicker or drier pieces can take longer. Continue soaking them until they remain underwater without a weight.
  5. Add them gradually. Once the coco curls stay submerged on their own, they are ready to be added to your aquarium.

Coco curls may release tannins after they enter the water. As a result, the water may develop a light amber or brown tint. This is a normal part of using natural botanicals.

You may also notice white or translucent biofilm growing on the curls after they have been submerged. This is common on new aquarium botanicals. Shrimp, snails, and other small grazers may feed on the biofilm.

Never use soap, household cleaners, or chemicals to prepare natural botanicals for aquarium use.
